drowning-8ball_2874895Table 1: Mike B (15) vs (04) Katie M:

Katie came out of the gates quick and deadly with some great shots and position play. Before Mike knew it, he was down in the 8-Ball Set by a substantial number of games. Katie poured in game winners in the first four games and had Mike on the ropes looking for one more game for the knockout punch. Unfortunately that didn’t come about as Mike mounted a great comeback effort. He nailed a 5 ball run to get on the score sheet in game 5. Then with his hooking ability, he turned a set loss into a great comeback victory. Mike notched the next four games to take the set with a 5-4 set win.

It got worse for Katie in the 9-Ball Set as Mike continued to pound in balls and win games. As Katie continued to make balls, but could not finish. Katie would miss at the most inopportune times and continued to give Mike some good starting shots . Mike took all 5 games in the set that included a break and run of all 9 balls in the 3rd game of the set. Mike had now taken a commanding lead in the match.

Katie’s woes continued in the 10-Ball Set. Mike continued to shoot well and hold off the good shooting that Katie is capable of. Mike notched the opening game and the momentum never left his side. Mike rolled through the set with another 5-0 victory. He posted a 7-10 combo in game 4. Mike takes the match with an 11 point win. A valiant effort by Katie and nice shooting by Mike.

Light comes on over tableTable 3: Victor F (12) vs (11) Walter W:

Victor taking over for Jimmy continues to shoot well both in the singles league as well as the doubles league as Walter’s shooting eye has also been spot on in his play as well. This is one of the highlighted games of the week. Victor was hot from the start of the match and after receiving a gift from Walter on an 8 ball out of turn, he got the momentum he needed. He nailed the next three games to take a 4-0 lead in the 8-Ball Set. When you are playing an excellent shooter like Walter, you cannot take anything for granted. Walter had proved that time and time again with his ability to make great comebacks. He mounted a very admirable comeback starting with game 5. With Victor sitting on the hill, Walter nailed a winner in game 5 to get on the sheet for his first win in the set. Walter then continued to gain steam and notched wins in games 6 & 7 with some very nice runs and finishes to cut the lead to a game. After Walter broke in game 8, the door was open for Victor. Victor nailed his 7 balls and the 8 ball for a 8 ball run to shut down Walter’s chance to win the set.

Walter opened the 9-Ball Set with an fairly quick win, nailing a 3-9 combo to get things going. Victor matched Walter with a nice finish notching the final four balls and the set was even. Walter continued to shoot well and notched back to back wins in game 3 and posted his second combo win using the 4 ball in game 4 to take a 3-1 lead in the set. Victor continued some fine shooting and this time ran 7 balls in game 5 to move one game closer to Walter.  Walter hit the hill with a nice run in game 6 and then finished off the set for his second back to back wins. He also used the four ball for the second time to nail a 9 ball and takes a 1 point lead in the match.

Walter again posted an opening win in the 10-Ball Set as he continued to stay focused. Victor got into the combo act as well as he used the 5 ball to nail a 10 in game 2. Victor seemed to gain the momentum and notched wins in game 3 & 4 , making it a 3-1 lead in the set. It was Walter answering the call and he too made some nice shots and position play to win back to back games and even the set at 3-3. Victor never slowed down and he made it back to back wins in games 7 & 8 that finished off the set and take the match by a point. It was a very tough match between two very competent shooters. Walter drops into third and will match up against Gary in the position round, as Victor will Mike Bates who vaulted into 2nd place by a few points. Nice shooting by both players.

Angry 8 BallTable 4 : Todd C (06) vs (15) Austin H:

Todd has relayed to me he has not been playing well and it showed in his match with another good shooter, Austin. The writer thought this would be a closer match than how it ended up.  Todd struck first in the 8-Ball Set nailed 4 balls and the 8 to close out game 1. Austin answered right back, only he notched back to back wins in games 2 & 3. Austin posted a 4 ball finish in game 2 and a 3 ball run in game 3. Todd notched one more win, taking game four with a four ball finish. It was all Austin from that point on as he seemed to take charge of the set. He didn’t make long runs, but when he missed he continued to keep Todd a bit off balance with some very tough leaves. Austin notched the next three in a row to close out set 1 with a 5-2 set win.

Austin got on the score sheet first in the 9-Ball Set as he continued to shoot very well. When Todd nailed 4 balls and out in game 2, it looked like he got back into a nice shooting rhythm and this set had the potential to go all nine games. Game three was a quick win for Austin as he popped in a 1-9 combo for the win. Todd did not find a combo but he did run the remainder of the rack in game 4 and the set was even again. Then it was like the curtain was dropped down on Todd and he couldn’t close out games. Austin notched game winners in 5, 6 & 7 as he took a 6 point lead in the match.

Austin continued to have the hot stick in the 10-Ball Set as he nailed the opening game with a 5 ball finish. The door continued to swing in the right direction for Austin as he nailed wins in the next 3 games, making it a 7 game run. This put him on the hill as Todd continued to make mistakes that cost him games. Todd broke the string of wins by Austin as he put together some nice shooting in game 5, and it looked like the momentum shifted back to his side. He ran the final three balls in game 6 and cut the lead to 2 games, trying to get back into the match. Austin then played some great defense and before Todd knew, it was over. Austin got him on the three fouls in a row rule to take game 7 and the match by 9 points. A valiant effort by Todd and nice shooting by Austin. Austin is scheduled to play Katie in the position round and Todd will match up against Ray.

Thumbs up Happy FaceTable 5 : Marty M (13) vs (13) Stephanie M:

This match pitted husband against wife and this match almost went the maximum amount of games, coming up a game short as 26 games were played. Marty seemed to rebound from his make up loss to Micks on Friday with some very nice shooting. He jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 8-Ball Set as he notched back to back wins in games 1 & 2. This would be the only set that would not go the distance. Stephanie has been playing very decent in the last several weeks and continued to shoot good. She ran the final four balls of her group in game 3 and the 8 ball to take game 3. Then it was a back and forth contest. Marty continued his sharp shooting and finished off the balls to take game 4. Stephanie again found a few openings left by Marty and took advantage nailing a win in game 5. Marty hit the hill with some great shot making after he got out of position in game 6 but was able to finish off the game and take another 2 game lead. Stephanie won game 7 but Marty closed out the set with a final game winner in 8. This gave Marty a 5-3 set win.

The 9-Ball set saw both players make some nice runs throughout the set. Marty struck first with a three ball finish to take the first game. Stephanie answered as she got to the table with two balls left and dropped them both for the win. Marty then got hot, nailing game winners in the next three games. He started with four and out in game 3 and then after a Stephanie miss on a possible win, notched the 9 ball in game 4. Marty hit the hill with another win in game 5 and on the verge of taking a commanding lead in the match. Then Marty went cold, missing several chances to close out the set. Stephanie fought her way back into the match. She nailed the final four balls in game 6 and the momentum shifted right back to her. Stephanie notched the wins in games 7, 8 and 9 to make it four straight and over take Marty for the set win. Stephanie takes the set 5-4 and now only trailed by a point heading into the final set.

The 10-Ball Set went back and forth from the start with both players warmed up from the other two sets. Marty started out the set with the first win as he continued to stay in a nice shooting groove. Stephanie also remained focused and pounded in several balls to take the 2nd game. The players split the next two games, Marty capping off a short run in game 3 and Stephanie getting a nice opening left by Marty to post the win in game 4.  After Marty took the lead once again with a nice win in game 5, Stephanie got hot. She stepped up to the table with 6 balls remaining and proceeded to run them all. She made it to the hill first as she got a chance at a quick win using the 1 ball in game 7, and put her on the hill. Marty needed the final two games to take this set and win the match. He matched Stephanie on the hill winning game 8, but Stephanie continued to shoot well and held off the charge by Marty in game 9 to win the game and make this match all even. Great shooting by both husband and wife in a very tense and competitive match. This ended in a 13-13 tie. Stephanie will play against Nigel in the final position round and Marty will have a rematch against Micks.

Table 6 : Micks M (08) vs (15) Gary L:

Micks was playing against one of the top shooters in this league and held his own admirably with some very nice shooting. Gary opened the 8-Ball Set with a 5 ball run to close out the game. After a few misses by Gary, Micks got to the table in game 2 and finished off his final 3 balls and the 8 to even up the set. Gary continued to shoot well and notched the win in game 3, and then ran out the final five balls in game 4 making it back to back wins to take a 3-1 lead. Micks would find a game winner in #5 to get within a game of Gary and that was as close as he would get. Gary put some solid shooting together in game 6 and finished off the set with a win in game 7 to close it out with a 5-2 set win.

Gary continued to stay in a nice shooting groove and opened up the 9-Ball Set with back to back wins in games 1 & 2. This gave him a four game run with some very nice shooting. Micks stopped Gary’s run at four as he nailed 5 balls in game 3 to get on the score sheet in the set. Gary and Micks exchanged the next two games, Gary notching game 4 and Micks staying close with a win in game 5. A few misses by Micks continued to give Gary some chances to close out games. He took game 6 to hit the hill and finished off the set with a four ball run to take game 7 and good size lead in the match. Gary wins the set 5-2.

The 10-Ball Set started out like the previous set as Gary nailed back to back wins in games 1 & 2. He took advantage of a few misses by Micks that gave him some great starting positions and got the momentum going his way. Micks again made some very nice shots and got back into the set with a nice finish in game 3, in a set that would go the distance. Gary maintained a 2 game lead as he posted the win in game 4 with some great position play leading to the win. Micks continued to press and with a four ball finish in game 5 he again cut the lead to one game. Gary continued to shoot well and posted the win in game 6 to get on the hill after finishing off the final four balls. It was Micks again finding a few chances to get back into the set. He ran three balls in game 7 and then got a chance to get to the hill with a combo try in game 8. Micks line it up perfectly and got even with Gary in the set taking the game. A few misses by Micks left the door open for Gary and he didn’t squander his chances. It was over as he pocketed the final ball in game 9 to take the final set 5-4. Nice comeback try by Micks and great shooting by Gary. Gary will be matched up against another good shooter, Walter Wnuk,  in the final position round.

2016 Winter Doubles League Standings – Final

PosTeamPTSWLDP

Rack going over billiard ballsThursday Night Doubles: The league players want to extend our heartfelt sympathy’s to Jim Pellerito (Bull Dogs) on the loss of his brother who passed away on the 16th of April. We continue to keep him and the family in our prayers.

In Jim’s absence, Micks McGillivray (who plays on the singles league) subbed for him and Bull Dogs were the only team to take all (15) points. Honorable mention to English Majors with a (14) point night as well as  The Two Old Guys with (14) points also. Nice shooting by all. The highlighted match was Double D vs Zenith match and it was a good one. Zenith and Double D tied in the match at (11) points each, but with Reckless faltering a bit, the door opened up for Double D to vault into 2nd place by a point. Reckless drops into third and Zenith finishes in fourth. Congratulations to English Majors who finish in first place. They had 14 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie. Nice shooting by all.

englishmajors Table 1: English Majors (14) vs (09) Reckless:reckless

Todd Cook subbed for Jimmy who is enjoying his new job in Ohio and he and Victor shut down the offense of Reckless which dropped them down the ladder into third place after spending most of the season in the 2nd place position. The 8-Ball Set did the most damage to Reckless’ chance to hold on to the spot as they could only muster one game in the set. Victor and Todd only allowed one win for Reckless in the set. Jim from Reckless nailed a win in game 3 as English Majors took the lead in the match with a 5-1 win. Todd accounted for 3 of the wins with Victor contributing two wins.

Reckless mounted a very good comeback in the match as they took the set that cut the match lead to 3 points. Victor stayed hot, nailing a 2-9 combo to start the 9-Ball Set. He was so focused that he continued to shoot extremely well, with Todd keeping Reckless from getting any kind of momentum, Victor notched four straight wins and sat on the hill with a 4-0 lead. Then Reckless seemed to feel the urgency of getting back into the set and they mounted a very nice comeback. Matt was shooting them in and Jim was keeping Todd and Victor on the cool side, not giving them easy starts. This strategy gave them a great finish. Matt continued to shoot them in and made it 5 straight wins finishing with a 2-9 combo for a 5-4 win.

Todd continued to help the team as the opened the 10-Ball Set with a 1-10 quick win in game 1. Matt & Jim took turns in running balls and Matt nailed the 2nd game winner and Jim ran 4 balls to close out game 3. Todd nailed a winner in game 4 and Jim answered with a winner in game 5. That would be all Reckless would get as Todd and Victor combined for the final three games to win the set 5-3. It was a very good try by Matt & Jim and nice shooting by Victor & Todd. Congratulations to English Majors who go the season without a loss, but they did have one tie, finishing with a 14-0-1 record.

  doubledTable 1: Double D (11) vs (11) Zenith:zenith

This was the highlighted match of the night finishing with a tied match after 22 games. The 8-Ball Set went all 9 games. Doug started Double D with the first win and Walter finished off game 2. Double D took game 3 and Zenith got into a good shooting rhythm. Walter pounded in game winners in 4 & 5 to take the lead. Dave evened the set with a win in game 6. Zenith got a break as Double D gave them game 7 to put them on the hill with a scratch on the 8 ball. Then with some very nice shooting and position play, Doug closed out the final two games for a 5-4 set win.

The 9-Ball Set didn’t go Zenith’s way either as missed opportunities gave their opponents a good jump in the match. Doug nailed a 3-9 in game one and Nigel ran 3 balls to help Zenith take game 2. Doug was hot with combo’s as he nailed a 8-9 in game 3. Double D took a 2 game lead with a win in game 4, posting back to back wins. Walter got into the scoring act as he nailed a winner in game 5. It was Double D again getting some good chances and made them count. They took the final two games for a 5-2 set win and a 6 point lead in the match.

It was Dave leading Double D for a win in game 1 to start the 10-Ball Set. Then it was all Zenith. Zenith continued to keep Double D from good starting shots and when they got their chance, they cashed in on them. The notched the next 5 games with both Nigel and Walter posting wins every other chance. With the set win, 5-1, this evened up the match at 11 points each. Nice shooting by all four players. Double D was able to vault into 2nd place with their 11 points. Congratulations to Doug and Dave. Zenith finished in fourth.

thetwooldguysTable 3: The Two Old Guys (14) vs (11) Just Another Bye Week:justanotherbyeweek

These two teams met before in the regular season and Bye week got the best of them. It was a different result this time as Two Old Guys played steady. The Two Old Guys took game one in the 8-Ball Set and then it went back and forth. All four players seemed to be well focused on the job at hand. Scott M continues to shoot well and posted back to back wins for Bye Week. This set went back and forth as Mike from Old Guys nailed back to back wins in games 4 & 5. Bye Week tied up the set as Scott K took game 6. Peter got The Two Old Guys on the hill with a win in game 7, but Scott M & Scott K combined for back to back wins to take a 5-4 set win.

Peter and Mike got off to a very quick start in the 9-Ball Set as they took turns on winning games. Mike posted wins in games 1 & 4 while Peter nailed a 2-9 combo in game 2 and a nice run in game 3 as The Two Old Guys built up a 4-0 lead. Scott K notched a 3-9 combo win in game 5 and also nailed a 6-9 combo in game 7 with Scott M posting a 4 ball finish in game 6 as Bye Week got within a game in the set. Peter put an end to any chance of Bye Week catching up as he finished off game 8 for a 5-3 set win.

Mike nailed a 2-10 combo in game one to start the 10-Ball Set. Mike continued to shoot well and finished a 5 ball run to take game 2. Scott M got Bye Week on the sheet with a nice run in game 3. Mike again gave The Two Old Guys a two game lead as he finished off game 4. Scott M nailed a 5-10 combo in game 5 and Scott K evened up the set with a win in game 6. That would be as close as they would get as Mike put his team ahead to stay. There was a no doubter in game 8 as Peter put the frosting on the set with a very quick 1-10 combo and a 5-3 win. This gave The Two Old Guys the match by 3 points. Nice shooting by all in a very tight match. The Two Old Guys finish in 5th and Just Another Bye Week finish in 7th.

bulldogs Table 3: Bull Dogs (15) vs (07) The Johns:thejohns

This match saw two subs fill in for missing players. Jim was at the funeral for his brother and Micks McGillivray filled in for him. John Jr was helping mama with their newborn baby and Omar DeMara subbed for him. After The Johns took game 1 to start the 8-Ball Set, Bull Dogs got on a run and posted four straight wins to hit the hill. The Johns notched game 6 and then it was over as Micks closed out game 7 for a 5-2 set win.

John Sr nailed a 1-9 combo for a very quick win to start the 9-Ball Set. Sr continued to shoot well and took game 2. Ray and Micks got the set even as they nailed back to back wins in games 3 & 4. John Sr nailed a very nice 6-9 combo in game 5 to again take the lead. Micks took game 6 and Omar got his team ahead and on the hill in game 7. Then with some missed opportunities by The Johns, Bull Dogs finished of the set with back to back wins in games 8 & 9, giving then a 5-4 win and four point lead in the match.

The Bull Dogs opened the 10-Ball Set with the first two wins. Omar got The Johns on the sheet with a nice 4 ball run to take game 3. That was all that Bull Dogs would give up. Micks nailed a 7-10 combo win in game 4 and followed that with a 3-10 win in game 5 to put Bull Dogs on the hill. Micks closed out the set with a win in game 6 for a 5-1 set win. Nice effort by Omar and John Sr and nice shooting by Micks and Ray. Bull Dogs were able to vault Just Another Bye Week to finish in 6th place as The Johns finished in the bottom of the pack. I will comment that The Johns and Just Another Bye Week were both the most improved teams in this league.
